Bruce Springsteen Dedicates “American Skin” to Trayvon Martin (NJ.com)
At his concert in Limerick, Ireland, on Tuesday, Bruce Springsteen dedicated the song “American Skin (41 Shots)” to Trayvon Martin, the slain youth whose killer George Zimmerman was found not guilty of murder on Saturday. The verdict has caused the public to reflect on race relations and has raised questions about whether the criminal justice system values the lives of black boys and men. Springsteen originally wrote “American Skin” for Amadou Diallo, an unarmed Guinean immigrant killed by New York City police officers who fired 41 shots at the 23-year-old after reportedly mistaking his wallet for a gun. Watch The Boss perform the song below.
Kerry Washington Revels in Her Emmy Nomination (EW)
Newlywed Kerry Washington learned Thursday that she’d received an Emmy nomination for lead actress for her portrayal of “fixer” Olivia Pope on ABC’s “Scandal.” Later that day she told Entertainment Weekly that she doesn’t act to please an audience—be it critics or award show voters. “Once you try to please a specific perspective or audience, for me, it gets in the way of the work,” she said. “The work is telling the story, and that’s what you have to do: Tell the story in the best way possible to serve the creative vision and to serve the story. You can never control how it’s going to be received.” Washington is only the second black actress ever to receive an Primetime Emmy nod for lead actress.
Zoe Saldana Talks Equality on “The Conversation” (The Conversation)
“Avatar” star Zoe Saldana recently dropped by “The Conversation with Amanda de Cadenet” to discuss equality, among saucier topics. She remarked that she has a hard time believing that a loving God would create one creature to be inferior to another. “It is impossible,” she said. “My mind, my soul, will never understand that because it is unnatural. I am equal to everything and anything that is around me. …For you to try to change me to make me more like yourself … (Raises middle finger.) Sit. On. This. It’s just not going to happen.”
Did Kanye West Lose His Mind Years Ago? (Gawker)
Evidently Kanye West was nuts years ago. A secret audio recording said to be from 2009 was just leaked and on it a man reported to be West sounds positively unhinged. The video was recorded on the same night that West famously interrupted Taylor Swift at the MTV Video Music Awards. “Taylor Swift cannot win over Beyoncé!” the voice purported to belong to West says on the tape. “Because I wrote my verse in two days, Taylor Swift cannot beat Beyoncé. As long as I’m alive! And if I’m alive, kill me then! Kill me then!” Um, okay.
